Tippr

Tippr is a community site built on the classic reddit codebase, updated for Python 3 and current Linux. It is made to be self-hosted: anyone can run their own Tippr instance, and it is why Tippr installs with one command or runs from a ready-made Docker Compose bundle or Proxmox LXC template.

Live Site: tippr.net is our primary Tippr instance, run by TechIdiots LLC. Visit it to see Tippr in action, or set up your own.

What's Different

Modern platform Ported from Python 2 to Python 3.12 on Ubuntu 24.04, with current dependencies and packaging.

Built for self-hosting Run your own instance on your own server. Tippr is designed so a community can host itself rather than depend on someone else's platform.

One-command install and ready-made containers The installer sets up the app and every service it needs, with TLS, generated passwords, systemd units, and production or development settings. If you would rather not install on a bare server, there is a Docker Compose bundle and a Proxmox LXC template.

Search Full-text search powered by OpenSearch.

AI content labels Each post is marked human-made, AI-assisted or AI-generated. Vaults can restrict them, and users can hide them.

A welcoming default community Starter vaults lean toward technology, science, making things and fun, including LGBTQ+. The content policy explicitly bans hate based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Feeds Vaults can fill themselves from RSS and Atom feeds, so a new site has posts from day one.

Built-in reading features Night mode, infinite scroll, keyboard navigation, expanding images, filters, user tags, new-comment counts and an account switcher, all of which used to need a browser extension.

Admin pages Site settings, email, spam protection, AdSense, payments (PayPal, Stripe, Coinbase and BitPay), feeds, backups, users and vaults, without editing config files.

Backups and server moves Export the whole site, copy it to another server over HTTPS, and restore it there.

Quick Start (Ubuntu 24.04)

On a fresh server or VM, as root:

useradd -m -s /bin/bash tippr
git clone https://github.com/TechIdiots-LLC/tippr.git /opt/tippr
cd /opt/tippr
TIPPR_USER=tippr TIPPR_DOMAIN=example.com ./install-tippr.sh

Prefer containers? Each release includes a Docker Compose bundle and a Proxmox LXC template, so you can have your own instance running without setting up a server by hand.
